EXPERT SAYS

Why should pregnant women avoid certain types of food?

It is important for a pregnant woman to eat healthy foods to nourish herself and her unborn baby.

As soon as a woman finds out she’s pregnant, she should avoid certain foods, as they can harm her or her baby. Hormone changes in a woman lower her immune system, making it harder for her body to fight off illnesses.

Another reason is that pregnant women are at a higher risk of becoming infected with a bacteria called Listeria than an average healthy adult, and this can lead to a miscarriage, stillbirth or premature labour.

Some foods are more likely to contain this bacteria, Salmonella, which can cause food poisoning and harm a woman and her baby.

Is there any food to avoid during pregnancy?

Although most foods are safe to eat, the following is a list of some foods that should be avoided in pregnancy:

  • Fish high in mercury - high levels of mercury can affect a baby’s developing nervous system
  • Organ meat like liver and kidney - contain lots of vitamin A, which can cause congenital malformations and pregnancy loss, especially in the first trimester+
  • Raw seafood like sushi
  • Soft and semi-soft cheeses
  • Unpasteurized milk
  • Undercooked meat or fish
  • Pre-cut fruits and vegetables
  • Unwashed fruits and vegetables
  • Raw or undercooked eggs
  • Alcohol
  • Contaminated drinking water

What are safe foods you can take during pregnancy to have a healthy baby?

You can take a wide variety of healthy proteins, vegetables, grains, and fresh fruits to have a healthy baby.

Drinking clean water regularly is essential for staying hydrated.

It supports digestion and helps nutrients circulate in the body.

It can also help alleviate pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness and nausea.

Whatever you eat that affects your well-being, see a doctor before you continue.
